Ducks offense quieted by Sugar Land pitching

(Central Islip, N.Y., Sept. 8, 2013) – The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the Sugar Land Skeeters 2-1 on Sunday afternoon in the third game of a four-game set at Bethpage Ballpark.

A RBI groundout in the first inning by Brian Burgamy put Sugar Land on top first. A RBI single to right by Josh Pressley in the third extended the lead to two. Long Island plated a run in the sixth on Adam Bailey’s RBI single to center but could not pull even.

Skeeters starter David Pauley (5-3) earned the win, tossing six innings, allowing just one run on seven hits with one strikeout. Ducks starter Shaun Garceau (1-1) took the hard luck loss, yielding two runs on five hits while striking out four in seven innings. Gary Majewski picked up his 20th save with a scoreless ninth.

Bryant Nelson led the Flock with three hits while Lew Ford and Kraig Binick each added two.

The Ducks and Skeeters wrap up their four-game set on Monday night. Game time is slated for 6:35 p.m., with the Bethpage Ballpark gates opening at 5:35. Right-hander Bob Zimmermann toes the rubber for the Ducks against Skeeters righty Michael Nix. It’s the Eighth Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Night at the ballpark, presented by Good Samaritan Hospital. The first 1,500 fans in attendance will receive Commemorative Pink T-Shirts while the first 5,000 fans through the gates will take home Commemorative Pamphlets. Following the game, all fans in attendance will be treated to a Grucci Fireworks Extravaganza.

In conjunction with Breast Cancer Awareness Night, the Ducks will be wearing special jerseys which will be auctioned off through the seventh inning stretch of Monday’s game. Fans can place their bids by visiting the auction tables located outside the Waddle In Shop, and net proceeds from the auction will benefit the Breast Cancer Awareness organization and coalitions in attendance.

Duck Tales: With a pair of hits, Lew Ford has now earned at least one hit in each of the 11 games he has played with the Ducks this season. He is batting .391 (18-for-46) in those 11 games and has driven in four runs while scoring five runs. The former big leaguer had a hit in 15 of the 19 games he played with the Ducks in 2012 before getting signed by the Baltimore Orioles organization. The two-hit game for Ford was his third two-hit contest and fifth multi-hit game with the Flock this season…With three hits, Bryant Nelson picked up his seventh three-hit game of the year which is second-most on Long Island behind Joash Brodin. He has also earned multiple hits in four consecutive games and in six of his last 12 contests. The switch hitter now has 41 multi-hit games, just one behind Brodin who leads the team with 42…Shaun Garceau earned his second quality start in as many outings since joining the Flock. In 14 combined innings with Long Island, the righty has yielded just three runs (1.50 ERA) on 13 hits and three walks while striking out nine…Leo Rosales continued his strong pitching of late with a scoreless ninth inning. The former Major Leaguer has now given up just two earned runs in his last 14 outings. In 14 innings during that span, he has yielded 14 hits and four walks while striking out 22.
