Offensive onslaught not enough for Ducks

(Sugar Land, Texas, May 17, 2016) – The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the Sugar Land Skeeters 8-7 on Tuesday afternoon in the first of four games at Constellation Field.

The Ducks struck first in the top of the first inning as first baseman Tyler Colvin hit a two-out RBI single to drive in Fehlandt Lentini. The Skeeters would answer in the bottom of the inning, as Jeremy Barfield hit a two-out three-run home run to take a two run lead.

The Ducks would take one back in the top of the second, as Cody Puckett would score on an Anthony Vega fielder’s choice. In the top of the third, during Mike Dowd’s second plate appearance, Lew Ford scored on a passed ball. The Skeeters would answer quickly, in the bottom of the third, as Ricky Hague would hit a two-run homer, and Barfield would hit another home run, this time a solo shot.

The Ducks rebounded in the top of the fourth, as Ford hit an RBI single to drive in Anthony Vega, Tyler Colvin doubled to drive in Dan Lyons, Sean Burroughs hit a sacrifice fly to score Ford, and Colvin scored on a passed ball with new Duck Ruben Gotay at the plate. The four-run fourth propelled the Ducks to a 7-6 lead.

The Skeeters would rally one more time in the bottom of the sixth. Andy LaRoche would score on a fielder’s choice from Wilfredo Rodriguez to tie the game at seven, and Jeff Dominguez then grounded to third and was safe on an errant throw from Gotay, scoring Patrick Palmiero.

Chris Rearick picked up the win, tossing two innings giving up no runs, a hit, a walk, and getting one strikeout in relief of Bryan Morgado, Jack Snodgrass (3-2) got the loss, pitching five and two-thirds innings, allowing eight runs (five earned), on eight hits, two walks, and four strikeouts. Derrick Loop got the save with a scoreless ninth.

Ford led the Flock offensively, with two hits, a run batted in, two runs, and two walks. Colvin added two hits of his own, with two RBIs, and a run.

The Ducks continue their road stretch with a single-admission double header against the Skeeters Wednesday night, with first pitch scheduled for 6:05 CST (7:05 EST) from Constellation Field. Long Island returns home on Tuesday, May 24 to begin a three-game set against the Bridgeport Bluefish.
