Brad Thompson tosses complete game to top Long Island

(Central Islip, N.Y., July 3, 2013) – The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the Somerset Patriots 8-1 on Wednesday night before a past-capacity crowd of 6,796 at Bethpage Ballpark.

The Patriots opened the scoring when Jake Fox drove in a run in the first inning with a single. Somerset doubled their lead on a Corey Smith RBI double to left field in the third. Aharon Eggleston’s RBI double in the fourth inning and Cory Aldridge’s RBI single in the fifth extended the lead to 4-0.

The Patriots added four more in the seventh inning before Kraig Binick hit a solo home run to left in the bottom of the seventh to put the Ducks on the board.

Somerset starter Brad Thompson (5-3) picked up the win, throwing a complete game, allowing one run on five hits with one strikeout. Starter Bill Murphy (0-10) took the loss for the Ducks, giving up four runs (three earned) on five hits with four strikeouts in six innings.

The Ducks and Patriots wrap up their three-game series on Thursday night. Game time is slated for 7:05 p.m., with the Bethpage Ballpark gates opening at 6:05. Following the game, all fans in attendance will be treated to a Grucci Fireworks Extravaganza, presented by Atlantic Honda. Righty John Brownell starts for the Ducks against Patriots southpaw Graham Taylor.

Duck Tales: Tonight’s game marked Ray Navarrete’s 800th career game with the Long Island Ducks. The longest tenured player in franchise history leads the club all-time in games played, hits, home runs, RBI, runs and doubles. He’s second overall in Atlantic League games played with 876, trailing former Patriot Jeff Nettles (1,006). Navarrete posted his seventh two-hit game and his 11th multi-hit game overall…With his double in the seventh inning, Joash Brodin has now recorded a hit in 15 of his last 17 games. In that span he’s hitting .403 (29-for-72) with four doubles, four homers, 10 RBI and 10 runs scored…Kraig Binick’s home run was his first of the season and his first in a Ducks uniform since September 1, 2012 at York. The Ducks have now hit 72 home runs on the year, good for second in the Atlantic League behind Somerset (73)…The past-capacity crowd of 6,796 was the largest of the season at Bethpage Ballpark. The previous high was 6,532 which occurred on Tuesday night against Somerset. It also marked the fifth sold out crowd of the season at the Duck Pond. The Ducks have now hosted 620 sellout crowds in franchise history, an Atlantic League record.
