(Bridgewater, N.J., Apr. 28, 2012) – The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the Somerset Patriots 14-3 on Saturday night in the third game of a four-game set at TD Bank Ballpark.

GAME AUDIO: Brandon Sing launches his first homer as a Duck

The Patriots cracked the scoreboard first with three runs in the third inning off Ducks starter Joe Esposito. RBI singles by Jonny Tucker and Freddy Sandoval, sandwiched around a run-scoring double from Freddie Bynum, did the damage.

The Ducks cut the deficit to one with single runs in the fourth and fifth off Somerset starter Roy Merritt. Lew Ford’s RBI infield single in the fourth and Brandon Sing’s RBI single to left in the fifth highlighted the scoring. However, a seven-run fifth for the Patriots, capped by Yusuf Carter’s three-run homer, and a three-run sixth put the game out of reach.

Carlton Smith (1-0) got the win in relief, tossing one and one-third scoreless innings while striking out two. Esposito (0-1) suffered the loss, yielding six runs on seven hits in four and one-third innings of work.

Sing, Ford and Ryan Garko each led the Ducks with two hits at the plate. Sing finished with a homer, two RBI and two runs scored.

Long Island and Somerset close out their series on Sunday afternoon. Game time is set for 1:05 p.m. from TD Bank Ballpark. Right-hander Bob Zimmermann takes the mound for the Ducks against the Patriots’ righty Paul Phillips.
