Scott Kelly’s home run lifts Patriots to 11th inning win
(Bridgewater, N.J., Sept. 21, 2016) – The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the Somerset Patriots 3-2 in 11 innings on Wednesday night in Game One of the Liberty Division Championship Series at TD Bank Ballpark. Somerset now leads the best-of-five series one game to none.
GAME AUDIO: Highlights from the series opener
The Patriots took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on David Vidal’s two-out RBI double off Ducks starter John Brownell. Cody Puckett tied the game in the second when he scored from third on a throwing error by Patriots starter Will Oliver.
Long Island took the lead in the fourth on Anthony Vega’s two-out RBI single to right field. Somerset tied the game back up at two in the sixth on Carlos Guzman’s two-out RBI double to right-center.
It stayed that way until the bottom half of the 11th inning. With one out, Scott Kelly’s fly ball down the left field line cleared the wall for a solo home run to give the Patriots the walk-off win.
Neither starter factored into the decision. Oliver pitched seven innings of two-run ball, allowing eight hits and two walks while striking out three. Brownell lasted six innings, yielding two runs on five hits and four walks with two strikeouts. Efrain Nieves (1-0) picked up the win after throwing a scoreless 11th inning, giving up one hit while striking out two. James Lomangino (0-1) took the loss after surrendering the game-winning homer.
Puckett, Fehlandt Lentini, Ruben Gotay and Mike Dowd each had two hits to pace the Flock.
