Long Island totals 10 runs, 13 hits and inks former big league southpaw

(Central Islip, N.Y., April 18, 2016) – The Long Island Ducks defeated the Long Island Black Sox 10-1 on Monday afternoon in the third game of the 2016 spring training schedule. In addition, the team announced the signing of left-handed pitcher Eury De La Rosa, who will begin his first season with the Flock.

Long Island exploded to a 4-0 lead in the first inning against Black Sox starter and former Duck Chris McCoy. A run-scoring fielder’s choice off the bat of Dan Lyons and a two-run single by Cody Puckett highlighted the inning. Two more runs in the second on an error and a sacrifice fly from Sean Burroughs increased the lead to six.

The Ducks offense continued to roll with a run in the sixth on Matt Wessinger’s sac fly. Eighth inning RBI singles by Anthony Vega, Delta Cleary Jr. and Joey Falcone capped the scoring at 10-1.

Ducks starter Jack Snodgrass pitched four innings, allowing just one unearned run on four hits while striking out one. Jarrett Casey, Patrick Crider, Nick Struck, Kevin Vance and Todd Coffey combined to throw five scoreless innings, yielding just five hits and one walk with nine strikeouts in relief. McCoy lasted three innings, giving up six runs (four earned) on five hits and five walks while striking out two.

Cleary Jr. led the Flock offensively with three hits and three runs. Puckett, Falcone and Fehlandt Lentini added two hits apiece.

De La Rosa comes to the Ducks with two seasons of Major League experience, both with the Arizona Diamondbacks. He went 2-1 with a 4.21 ERA and 48 strikeouts in 44 games during that span. In his big league debut on July 14, 2013, the Dominican Republic native threw two perfect innings against the Milwaukee Brewers. The following season, he compiled a 2-0 record with a 2.95 ERA in 25 appearances out of the bullpen.

The 26-year-old spent the 2015 season with the Padres, Athletics and Dodgers organizations, reaching the Triple-A level with all three. He combined to pitch in 49 games (one start) and totaled a 4-2 record with a 3.32 ERA, eight saves and 54 strikeouts. He previously was named an MiLB.com Organization All-Star with the Diamondbacks in 2012 and a Northwest League Post-Season All-Star in 2010. De La Rosa was originally signed as an amateur free agent by the Diamondbacks in 2008.

The Ducks will close out their spring training schedule on Tuesday when they play host once again to the Black Sox. Game time is slated for 12:00 p.m., with the Bethpage Ballpark gates opening at 11:30 a.m. Right-hander Mark Blackmar is slated to start for Long Island against Black Sox righty and former Duck Matt Soren.

Long Island will begin the 2016 regular season on Thursday, April 21 when the visit the Somerset Patriots to open a four-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. from TD Bank Ballpark. Following a week-long road trip to start the season, the Ducks will return home on Thursday, April 28 for the 2016 Home Opener against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs. Game time is slated for 6:35 p.m., with the Bethpage Ballpark gates opening at 5:35 (5:20 for full season ticket holders).
