(Central Islip, N.Y., May 2, 2024) – The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the Staten Island FerryHawks 14-7 on Thursday night in the final game of a three-game series at Fairfield Properties Ballpark.
Both teams exchanged zeroes until the top of the fourth inning when Staten Island plated six runs against Ducks starter Wei-Yin Chen. Taylor Motter’s two-run home run to left field and Robert Brooks’ three-run homer to left-center highlighted the inning. The Ducks answered back with three runs of their own in the bottom of the frame on Chance Sisco’s RBI single and Rixon Wingrove’s two-run double off FerryHawks starter Mike Shawaryn.
It stayed that way until the seventh when Nate Scantlin’s two-run single ballooned the FerryHawks lead to 8-3. Frank Schwindel’s RBI single to left in the bottom of the inning closed the gap to four.
A two-run double by Scantlin and a balk that plated Kolby Johnson in the eighth widened the gap to 11-4. Long Island pushed two more runs across in the bottom of the eighth on Scott Kelly’s RBI fielder’s choice and a wild pitch that plated Kevin Higgins. A three-run ninth by Staten Island rounded out the scoring for the visitors, while the Ducks pushed a final run across in the bottom of the ninth.
Shawaryn (1-0) earned the win, tossing five innings of three-run ball, allowing six hits and two walks while striking out three. Chen (0-1) took the loss, conceding six runs on nine hits in four innings with two strikeouts.
Schwindel, Dearden and Jackie Bradley Jr. each had three hits to lead the Ducks offensively. Schwindel drove in a run and scored twice, Dearden collected an RBI and a run, and Bradley Jr. scored a run and walked.
