(Central Islip, N.Y., July 9, 2022) – The Long Island Ducks today announced that left-handed pitcher Stephen Tarpley’s contract has been purchased by the San Francisco Giants organization. He will report to the team’s Double-A affiliate in Richmond, Va.

“Stephen has been exceptional for us all season, especially since moving into the starting rotation,” said Ducks President/GM Michael Pfaff. “He is very deserving of this opportunity, and we wish him the best of luck with the Giants.”

Tarpley made 13 appearances (nine starts) with the Ducks this season. He compiled a 3-3 record with a 3.29 ERA and held opponents to a .228 batting average. The southpaw struck out 62 batters, tied for fifth-most in the Atlantic League, and walked only 14 in 54.2 innings of work. After beginning the year in the bullpen, he moved into the starting rotation on May 18th. In his nine starts, Tarpley went 3-2 with a 2.47 ERA and 59 strikeouts to 14 walks. He struck out seven or more batters in six of his nine starts and recorded nine or more punchouts on three occasions.

The 29-year-old has four previous seasons of Major League experience, including two with the New York Yankees (2018-19), Miami Marlins (2020) and New York Mets (2021). He combined to appear in 44 games (one start), going 3-2 with a 7.05 ERA, three saves, and 58 strikeouts to 31 walks over 44.2 innings of work. In addition to his time with the Mets, the Los Angeles native pitched with Triple-A Syracuse in 2021, making nine relief appearances. Tarpley was originally selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the third round of the 2013 amateur draft.

Tarpley is the third member of the 2022 Ducks to have his contract purchased by a Major League organization, joining right-handed pitcher Brett Kennedy (Red Sox, May 24) and infielder Deven Marrero (Mets, June 25). The Ducks saw 11 players have their contract purchased by an MLB club or foreign professional league in 2021, and three others signed with Major League organizations following the conclusion of the 2021 season (Ty Kelly, Dodgers; Matt Vogel, Orioles; Rob Griswold, Braves). A franchise record 15 Ducks had their contract purchased during the 2019 season.
