(Staten Island, N.Y., May 12, 2023) – The Long Island Ducks defeated the Staten Island FerryHawks 3-2 on Friday night in the opener of a three-game series at Staten Island University Hospital Community Park.

The Ducks broke a scoreless deadlock in the top of the fifth inning when a leadoff solo homer by Dustin Woodcock and a two-out RBI double by Daniel Murphy gave the Flock a 2-0 lead. A sacrifice fly off the bat of Mitchell Piatnik in the bottom of the inning closed the gap to 2-1. However, back-to-back two-out doubles in the seventh from Adeiny Hechavarria and Murphy gave the Ducks their two-run lead back at 3-1.

Staten Island closed to within 3-2 in the eighth on a sac fly to left-center by Adrian Sanchez. Jose Jose would follow by getting the final out of the inning, and Kevin Quackenbush would retire the side in order to end the game.

Ducks starter Stephen Tarpley (1-0) earned the win, tossing six and one-third innings of one-run ball, allowing three hits and a walk while striking out five. FerryHawks starter Austin DeCarr (0-2) took the loss, giving up two runs on three hits and four walks over four and two-thirds innings with four strikeouts. Quackenbush picked up his second save with a 1-2-3 ninth, striking out one.

Murphy led the Ducks offensively with two hits and two RBIs. Woodcock added two hits, an RBI, a run and a walk.
