Ducks rally for dramatic win over Skeeters

(Sugar Land, Texas, June 24, 2015) – The Long Island Ducks defeated the Sugar Land Skeeters 5-4 on Wednesday night in the second game of a six-game series at Constellation Field.

GAME AUDIO: Highlights from the comeback victory

The Skeeters took a 1-0 lead in the second on a passed ball that scored Johan Limonta. The Ducks tied the game in the fifth inning on a two-out RBI triple down the left field line by Reegie Corona off of Skeeters starter Roy Merritt.

Sugar Land got the lead back in the sixth on a two-out RBI single to left by Amadeo Zazueta off of Ducks starter Mickey Jannis. Long Island would answer again in though in the seventh, as an error by Patrick Palmeiro off the bat of Prentice Redman scored Mike Blanke, who doubled, to tie the game at two. However, the Skeeters answered with a two-run seventh inning. Travis Scott’s RBI double and a run-scoring wild pitch did the damage.

The Ducks stormed back one more time to take their first lead of the series in the ninth. Corona’s RBI single to right and Randy Ruiz’s two-run single to center, both with two outs, highlighted the inning.

Neither starter factored into the decision. Jannis lasted six innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits and two walks while striking out seven. Merritt pitched six innings, giving up one runs on six hits with two strikeouts. Frank DeJiulio, Jr. (1-1) picked up the win after tossing a perfect eighth inning, striking out two. John Lujan (4-3) took the loss, surrendering three unearned runs on two hits and two walks in the ninth. Ryan Kussmaul collected his league-leading 18th save with a scoreless ninth, stranding the tying and winning runs on base.

Corona led the Flock with three hits, while Ruiz added two.

Both finished with two RBI. Long Island and Sugar Land continue their six-game set on Thursday night. Game time is slated for 8:05 p.m. EDT at Constellation Field.
