Somerset took an early 2-0 lead with single runs in the first and second inning off Ducks starter Dennis O’Grady. A wild pitch that plated Alfredo Rodriguez and a solo home run to right-center field off the bat of Carlos Guzman did the damage. The Patriots added an insurance run in the eighth inning on back-to-back doubles by Christian Marrero and pinch-hitter Adam Donachie.
Long Island put together a ninth inning rally against Patriots reliever Ronnie Shaban. RBI doubles from Marc Krauss and Ruben Gotay trimmed the deficit to 3-2. However, the Ducks were unable to plate the tying run.
Somerset starter Lucas Irvine (6-2) earned the win with six shutout innings, allowing one hit and four walks while striking out five. O’Grady (4-6) took the loss, giving up two runs on five hits and two walks over six innings with two strikeouts. Ronnie Shaban collected his sixth save of the year despite allowing two runs on two hits and a walk in the ninth.
The Ducks continue their homestand on Monday night when they open a three-game series against the New Britain Bees.
