Two-out, two-run blast in eighth inning leads Long Island to victory
(Central Islip, N.Y., Aug. 11, 2018) – The Long Island Ducks defeated the York Revolution 5-4 on Saturday night in the third game of a four-game series at Bethpage Ballpark.
Melky Mesa gave the Revolution an early 1-0 lead with a two-out solo home run to left field off Ducks starter Tyler Badamo. Long Island responded with two runs in the bottom of the second on Ramon Cabrera’s solo homer to right and Jordany Valdespin’s RBI single off Revolution starter Carl Brice. David Washington’s sacrifice fly to center in the third increased the advantage to 3-1.
York pulled back even in the fifth on a two-out two-run home run to left field by Travis Witherspoon. A solo homer to left by Witherspoon in the top of the eighth put the Revs on top 4-3. However, following a two-out single by Cabrera in the bottom of the eighth, Anthony Vega launched a two-run homer to left-center, giving the Flock the lead for good.
Neither starter factored into the decision. Badamo pitched five innings, allowing three runs on two hits and two walks while striking out four. Brice lasted two innings, yielding three runs on three hits and four walks with three strikeouts. Carlos Pimentel (2-3) picked up the win despite allowing a run in the eighth inning. Jailen Peguero (2-5) suffered the loss, conceding two runs on four hits in the eighth. Francisco Rodriguez nailed down his 21st save with a perfect ninth inning, striking out one.
Valdespin, Cabrera and Lew Ford each had two hits to lead the Ducks. Vega drove in two runs and scored twice.
