Seventh inning blast lifts Ducks over Skeeters

(Sugar Land, Texas, Sept. 14, 2016) – The Long Island Ducks defeated the Sugar Land Skeeters 4-3 on Wednesday night in the final game of a three-game series at Constellation Field.

Long Island struck for three two-out runs in the first inning on Cody Puckett’s two-run double and Ruben Gotay’s RBI single off Skeeters starter Sean Gallagher. Sugar Land plated in the second on an RBI single by Beamer Weems off Ducks starter Daniel Herrera. They went on to tie the game at three in the third on Delwyn Young’s RBI single and a run-scoring double play ball.

It stayed 3-3 until the top of the seventh when Anthony Vega launched a solo home run to right, putting the Ducks on top by a run. Wilfredo Rodriguez tried to score the tying run in the eighth in a two-out double by Lance Zawadzki, but he was thrown out at the plate to end the inning. Todd Coffey then induced a game-ending double play in the ninth off the bat of Johan Limonta.

Herrera (3-1) earned the win, tossing seven innings and allowing three runs (two earned) on nine hits and a walk while striking out four. Zech Zinicola (2-5) suffered the loss after surrendering the game-winning home run in the seventh. Coffey picked up his 25th save with a scoreless ninth inning. Gallagher did not factor into the decision but lasted five innings, giving up three runs on four hits and two walks with five strikeouts.

Vega and Delta Cleary Jr. each had two hits to lead the Flock.

The Ducks continue their road trip on Thursday night when they begin a four-game series against the York Revolution. Game time is slated for 6:30 p.m. from PeoplesBank Park. Following the road trip, the Ducks will begin the 2016 Atlantic League playoffs on Wednesday, September 21 at a location to be determined. After playing Games One and Two on the road, the best-of-five Liberty Division Championship Series will return to Long Island on Friday, September 23 for Game Three. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m., with the Bethpage Ballpark gates opening at 5:35 (5:20 for full season ticket holders).
