Navarrete reaches 1,000th hit plateau in victory

(Central Islip, N.Y., Aug. 3, 2013) – The Long Island Ducks defeated the York Revolution 8-6 in waddle-off fashion on Saturday night before a past-capacity crowd of 6,507 at Bethpage Ballpark. In the win, Ray Navarrete earned his 1,000th career Atlantic League hit, becoming the second player in league history to reach that milestone.

Long Island took the game’s first lead in the third inning on a RBI groundout to third from Bryant Nelson and a RBI single to left by Ramon Castro. York would tie the score in the fifth on a two-run double to left-center by Andres Perez.

A RBI single by Michael Hernandez in the sixth and a two-out, two-run homer to left by Hernandez in the seventh put the Revolution on top 5-2. Ray Navarrete brought the Ducks within two on a solo homer to left in the seventh inning, which was hit number 1,000 for the longest tenured Duck. Both teams traded runs in the eighth on Perez’s RBI double and P.J. Phillips’ RBI single.

The Ducks then staged a four-run rally in the ninth inning to win the game. Ryan Strieby drove in a run with a single, setting the stage for Adam Bailey to blast a three-run walk-off home run to right.

Neither starter factored in the decision. James Houser threw six innings for the Ducks, allowing three runs on nine hits with a season-high 10 strikeouts, and Chris Cody allowed two runs on seven hits for the Revolution. T.J. Hose (2-2) picked up the win after throwing a perfect ninth inning while Juan Rincon (1-7) took the loss, allowing four unearned runs in the ninth inning.

Navarrete led the Ducks with three hits, while Castro, Strieby and Bailey each chipped in two. Bailey drove in three runs to pace Long Island.

The Ducks wrap up their homestand with the final game of the series against the Revolution on Sunday evening. Game time is slated for 5:05 p.m., with the Bethpage Ballpark gates opening at 4:05. It’s Italian Heritage Night at the ballpark, and the first 1,500 fans in attendance will receive Alzheimer’s Awareness Bracelets, courtesy of Order Sons of Italy in America. It’s also a Sunday Family Funday at the Duck Pond! Prior to the game, fans will be invited onto the field for an autograph session with the Ducks. After the game, kids and kids at heart can take part in Kids Run the Bases, presented by Bethpage Federal Credit Union. Right-hander Pete Budkevics gets the start for the Ducks against former big league righty Brett Tomko.

Duck Tales: The walk-off home run by Adam Bailey marked the Ducks’ sixth walk-off win if the season and the second walk-off home run. Joash Brodin blasted a walk-off grand slam in the 10th inning on July 19th. The win also marked the team’s 20th come-from-behind win of 2013…With his home run in the seventh inning, Ray Navarrete picked up his 1,000th career Atlantic League hit. He becomes the first Duck to reach that milestone and just the second player in Atlantic League history to reach the 1,000-hit plateau, joining Somerset’s Jeff Nettles (1,052). Navarrete and Nettles are also the only two players in league history to have played 900 or more games…With three hits in the game, Navarrete earned his fifth three-hit game and 16th multi-hit game of the year. Bailey picked up his 28th multi-hit contest while Castro earned his 17th and Strieby collected his seventh…The crowd of 6,507 was the Ducks’ ninth past-capacity crowd of the season at Bethpage Ballpark and second on the homestand. A sellout crowd of 6,224 attended Tuesday’s 5-4 win over the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs. Long Island is now 7-2 this season when there is a past-capacity crowd at the Duck Pond. The Ducks have hosted 624 sellouts all-time, an Atlantic League record.
