Ducks sign World Series champion

(Central Islip, N.Y., July 6, 2012) – Long Island Ducks team officials today announced the signing of outfielder Timo Perez. The former Major Leaguer begins his first season in the Atlantic League and 16th season in professional baseball.

“Timo has been successful in the Major Leagues, especially in the New York area,” said Ducks President/GM Michael Pfaff. “We’re excited to have him join our roster and contribute to our organization’s championship mission.”

Perez has spent eight seasons at the Major League level with the New York Mets (2000-03), Chicago White Sox (2004-05), St. Louis Cardinals (2006) and Detroit Tigers (2008). He has reached the World Series twice, winning the 2005 Fall Classic as a member of the White Sox. The 37-year-old has a career .269 average in 603 big league games with 26 home runs, 185 RBI, 187 runs and 91 doubles.

A native of the Dominican Republic, Perez was a .304 hitter and All-Star with Toledo (AAA, Tigers) in 2011, driving in 50 runs while collecting 32 doubles and 16 stolen bases. In 749 career minor league contests, he has a .315 career average with 74 home runs, 382 RBI, 185 doubles and 109 stolen bases. After spending the first four seasons of his career in Japan, Perez was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Mets in 2000.

The Long Island Ducks are members of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball and play their home games at Bethpage Ballpark. For further information, call (631) 940-DUCK or visit www.liducks.com.
