DUCKS FALL AS SOMERSET STRIKES EARLY

(Central Islip, N.Y., July 17, 2012) – The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the Somerset Patriots 8-3 on Tuesday night in the second game of a four-game series at Bethpage Ballpark.

The Patriots jumped out in front with a five-run first inning off Ducks starter Dan Meyer. Jake Fox hit a three-run homer, and Dan DeGeorge added a two-run shot in the inning. Three more runs came across in the following inning on a two-run triple by Freddie Bynum and a RBI sacrifice fly by Fox to increase the lead to 8-0.

The Ducks would get on the scoreboard with a run-scoring error in the bottom of the third. Reid Gorecki connected for a two-out, two-run single in the fourth off Patriots starter Derell McCall to cut the deficit to 8-3, but that was all the offense could muster.

McCall (3-4) picked up the win, tossing six innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits with five strikeouts. Meyer (2-6) suffered the loss after lasting just one and one-third innings, allowing eight runs on six hits and two walks.

Kraig Binick paced the Flock with two hits, while Gorecki added two RBI.

The Ducks host the Somerset Patriots in the third game of their four-game set on Wednesday night. Game time is slated for 7:05 p.m., with the Bethpage Ballpark gates opening at 6:05. The first 1,500 fans in attendance will receive Black and Orange Baseball Caps, courtesy of Ridgewood Saving Bank. Duck Tales:

The East Rockaway native entered the game hitting .450 (9-for-20) in his last five games…With two hits on the night, Kraig Binick grabbed his 12th two-hit game of the season and 19th multi-hit contest. Bryant Nelson and Ray Navarrete are tied for the team-lead with 17 two-hit games on the season…A combination of five different relief pitchers for the Ducks kept Somerset off the scoreboard for the final seven and two-thirds innings of the game. Jared and Josh Lansford, Eric Niesen, Armando Benitez and Connor Graham combined to allow just seven hits and three walks while striking out eight in that span.
