NIEUWENHUIS EIGHTH-INNING BLAST SENDS DUCKS PAST PATS

Long Island rallies from 2-0 deficit to take series opener vs. Somerset

(Central Islip, N.Y., June 11, 2019) – The Long Island Ducks defeated the Somerset Patriots 3-2 on Tuesday night in the opener of a three-game series at Bethpage Ballpark.

Both teams traded zeroes until the top of the fifth inning when Will Kengor lifted a sacrifice fly to center field, putting Somerset on top 1-0. A two-out solo home run to right field in the sixth by Mike Fransoso doubled the Patriots lead to two.

Long Island closed the gap to 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth on Kirk Nieuwenhuis’ RBI groundout to first base. Nieuwenhuis then gave the Flock a 3-2 lead with a two-out, two-run home run to right-center field in the eighth.

Neither starter factored into the decision. Joe Iorio lasted five innings for the Ducks, allowing a run on seven hits and two walks. Brett Oberholtzer threw seven innings of one-run ball for the Patriots, yielding seven hits and a walk while striking out seven. Enrique Burgos (4-1) picked up the win after pitching a scoreless eighth innings, striking out two. Mike Broadway (1-2) took the loss, surrendering two unearned runs on two hits in one inning. Josh Lueke picked up his second save with a perfect ninth inning, striking out one.

Ezequiel Carrera led the Flock with three hits and two runs scored, while Nieuwenhuis added two hits, three RBIs and a run.
