"NEVER-SAY-DIE" DUCKS RALLY FOR THRILLING WIN

(Waldorf, Md., July 30, 2012) – The Long Island Ducks defeated the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs 10-7 in 10 innings on Monday night in the first game of a four-game series at Regency Furniture Stadium.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS: Brandon Sing's solo homer, Timo Perez' go-ahead single, Dan Lyons' game-tying single, Bryant Nelson's go-ahead RBI fielder's choice and Shawn Williams' two-run single

Southern Maryland jumped on the board with four runs in the opening inning against Ducks starter Bob Zimmermann. A RBI single by Travis Garcia and a three-run double by Richard Mercado did the damage. Long Island cut the lead in half on a solo homer by Brandon Sing and a sacrifice fly to center from Dan Lyons in the fourth off Blue Crabs starter Matthew Vasquez.

A three-spot in the fifth for the Ducks gave them a 5-4 lead, with Sing’s RBI double, a sac fly by Bryant Nelson and a RBI single from Timo Perez highlighting the inning. However, a two-run homer by Casey Benjamin and a solo shot from Mercado in the bottom of the fifth put the hosts back ahead.

Long Island would tie the game at seven on a RBI single by Joash Brodin in the sixth and a run-scoring base hit to right by Lyons in the ninth, sending the game to extra innings. A three-run 10th inning gave the Ducks the win, with a RBI fielder’s choice off the bat of Nelson and a two-run single for Shawn Williams providing the offense.

Jeremy Hill (3-3) got the win, tossing two innings of relief, allowing just one hit while striking out three. Jim Ed Warden (2-7) suffered the loss, surrendering four runs on five this in one and two-thirds innings of work. Jon Hunton earned his seventh save with a scoreless bottom of the 10th.

Navarrete and Nelson led the offensive attack with three hits, while five other players had two. Four Ducks drove in four runs, while Nelson’s three runs scored led the way. The Ducks bullpen also shined, pitching five and one-third innings of scoreless baseball, allowing just one hit while striking out seven.
