PATRIOTS CLAIM SEE-SAW AFFAIR

Teams combine for 19 runs and 27 hits in series opener

(Central Islip, N.Y., May 10, 2013) – The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the Somerset Patriots 10-9 on Friday night in the first game of a three-game series at Bethpage Ballpark.

GAME AUDIO: Navarrete's RBI doubles, Perales' two-run single, Suarez's two-run homer and Henriquez's RBI single

POSTGAME VIDEO: Kevin Baez and Ray Navarrete talk about the game

Somerset jumped on the board with four unearned runs in the first inning courtesy of a grand slam by Luis Montanez off Ducks starter John Brownell. Long Island answered back with two in their half of the inning off Patriots starter Erik Arnesen on a Ray Navarrete RBI double and a sac fly by Adam Bailey.

After the Pats grabbed a run in the second, the Ducks scored twice in the second and twice in the third to take a 6-5 lead. Another Navarrete RBI double, Ben Broussard’s run-scoring single, and a two-run single by Danny Perales did the damage. Somerset tied the game with a run in the sixth and took the lead with three more in the seventh. However, two runs in the seventh and one in the eighth for Long Island tied the game back up at nine. A two-run homer to left by Gabe Suarez and a RBI single to center by Ralph Henriquez highlighted the scoring.

In the ninth, Somerset took the lead for good on a RBI fielder’s choice off the bat of Eddy Martinez-Esteve. Neither starter factored into the decision. Brownell allowed six runs (two earned) on nine hits in five and one-third innings while striking out six, and Arnesen yielded six runs on 11 hits in four innings of work. Jason Lowey (1-0) earned the win with a scoreless two-thirds of an inning, while Leo Rosales (0-1) suffered the loss after allowing one unearned run on one hit in the ninth. Jon Hunton earned his ninth save with a scoreless ninth.

The Ducks and Patriots continue their three-game set on Saturday with a day/night doubleheader. Game time for the opener is slated for 1:05 p.m., with the Bethpage Ballpark gates opening at 12:05. It’s Peanut-Free/Food Allergy Awareness Day, and there will be no sale of peanuts at the ballpark during the game, giving those struggling with peanut allergies the chance to attend a ballgame. Right-hander Connor Graham takes the mound for the Ducks against Patriots righty Brad Thompson.

The nightcap is set to begin at 7:05 p.m., with the ballpark gates opening at 6:05. Following the game, all fans in attendance will be treated to a Grucci Fireworks Extravaganza, presented by Nicolock. Southpaw Matt Way toes the rubber for the Ducks against Patriots left-hander Graham Taylor.

Tickets for both games and all Ducks regular season home games are now on sale. Fans can purchase their tickets by visiting the Bethpage Ballpark box office, calling 631-940-TIXX or by CLICKING HERE. Fans unable to make the twinbill can follow all the action for both games live online, with streaming video and audio available on the Ducks’ official YouTube channel, www.youtube.com/ducksbaseball. Game two of the doubleheader will also be broadcast on the radio home of the Ducks, 103.9-FM WRCN.

###

Duck Tales: Navarrete’s two RBI doubles in the ballgame increased his season total in doubles to four, which ties him with Danny Perales for the team lead. The eighth-year Duck set an Atlantic League record in 2012 with 50 doubles on the season. As a team, the Ducks clubbed five doubles in the game, their most in a single game this season…Gabe Suarez’s home run in the seventh inning was his second of the season and the Ducks’ 19th of the year. After not going deep in his first 53 games in a Ducks uniform, Suarez has now gone deep twice in the last six games…The nine runs and 14 hits by the Ducks were their second-highest totals in a game this season. Long Island scored 10 runs on April 26 vs. Sugar Land and collected 15 hits on May 7 at Lancaster.
