Higgins begins his first season with the Ducks and third in professional baseball. The infielder spent the last two seasons with the Norther Colorado Owlz of the Pioneer League, registering a batting average of .344, along with 145 hits, 74 runs batted in, a .346 on-base percentage and .750 OPS across 115 games played.

Prior to his professional career, Higgins played collegiate baseball at Suffolk University (2016-17), where he was named Third Team All-Great Northeast Conference following his sophomore season while helping Suffolk to a GNAC Conference Championship in 2017. He then transferred to St Bonaventure University in 2018, where he played until the conclusion of the 2020 season. In 2019 he started 38 games at second base and five at shortstop, finishing second on the team in runs batted in, while also registering ten extra-base hits and 13 multi-hit games and batting .340 with runners in scoring position.
